Kinini, Rulindo, Rwanda
To understand how a group can produce 87 point coffee in their first year of production, you have to understand the people behind the coffee. Dreamers.
This is a unique coffee, “Kinini” means, literally, ‘this big thing right here’. It is the name of the collaboration of cooperatives seeking to pool their efforts to improve their lots. 85% of the members are women. Rwanda may contribute less than 0.2 percent of the global coffee supply, but its high-quality coffee is renowned worldwide. Our Rwanda Kinini Village Anaerobic coffee is a unique light roast, naturally processed to highlight delightful notes of Dark Chocolate, Dried Berry, and Coffee Cherry.
This spot is not only stunning for its views, but its high elevation that dwarfs even the well-known Lake Kivu region. The structure of the project was unprecedented. Kinini Coffee signed a "lease" on parcels of land owned by various farmers throughout the area. This lease stipulated that Kinini would provide all these farmers with coffee trees, training, and organization. They started distributing coffee seedlings to farmers, setting up training, building their washing station, and organizing farmers, as well as gender equity training. You can taste the care taken at the farm, the washing station, during cherry collection, and on the drying tables. The hearts and souls of the people Kinini Coffee Cooperative are in these coffees.
