Simple AeroPress Recipe

At Conscious Cup, we have been using the AeroPress since 2007 and have always loved its simplicity and enormous potential for flavor. This is the upright version: 11 grams of coffee, 200 grams of water, two minutes of steeping and a gentle press. It makes one clean, sweet cup and it is the recipe we hand to anyone who is brewing for the first time.

What you'll need

  • AeroPress and Filter · One paper filter in the cap
  • Burr Grinder · Medium setting · table salt texture
  • Gram Scale · 0.1g precision · with timer
  • Kettle · Any style · no gooseneck required
  • Mug or Server · Sturdy enough to press on

Directions

  1. Set the brewer | Setup | Put a paper filter in the cap, screw the cap on, and set the brewer in the standard position on a mug or server. There is no need to rinse the filter or preheat the brewer.
  2. Weigh and grind | Setup | Weigh out 11 grams of coffee and grind it to a medium consistency, about the texture of table salt. Tip the grounds into the brewer and give it a light shake so the bed sits level.
  3. Pour | 0:00 → 0:15 | Start the timer and pour 200 grams of water, aiming to wet all of the coffee as you pour. Pour in a circle rather than into one spot so no dry pocket is left at the bottom.
  4. Cap and wait | 0:15 → 2:00 | Immediately place the plunger on top of the brewer, about one centimetre in. The plunger seals the chamber and creates a vacuum that stops the coffee dripping through while it steeps. Wait two minutes.
  5. Swirl | 2:00 → 2:30 | Holding the brewer and the plunger together, gently swirl the brewer once or twice. The swirl settles the grounds into a flat bed so the press is even. Wait thirty seconds more.
  6. Press | 2:30 → 3:00 | Press gently all the way down, taking about thirty seconds. Stop when you hear the hiss of air passing the bed. Remove the cap over the bin, press the puck out, and rinse the brewer.
