Kalita Wave

The Kalita Wave is a versatile and user-friendly pour-over method that can produce a clean and balanced cup of coffee. At Conscious Cup, we appreciate its ability to provide consistent and controlled brews, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced brewers. Below is a guide to brewing with the Kalita Wave that will bring out the best in your coffee.

What you'll need

  • Kalita Wave, Filter, and Server
  • Grinder
  • Scale
  • Gooseneck Kettle
  • Clean spring or filtered water (250g)
  • Conscious Cup Coffee (15g)

Directions

  1. Prepare the Kalita Wave on top of a mug or carafe. Insert a paper filter and rinse it with hot water to warm up the vessel and remove any paper taste. Discard the excess water.
  2. Grind 15 grams of coffee on a medium setting. This is called the dry weight (the weight of the ground coffee). The grind size should be similar to table salt.
  3. Place the ground coffee into the Kalita Wave filter and shake it gently to level the coffee bed. This ensures even saturation during the bloom phase.
  4. Tare your scale so it reads zero with the Kalita Wave and coffee on it.
  5. Start your timer and pour 50 grams of water over the coffee grounds, beginning in the center and moving outward in a circular motion. This is called the bloom, and it allows the coffee to release CO2, making way for better extraction. Wait 30 seconds.
  6. Pour an additional 50 grams of water at 0:30, 1:00, 1:30, and 2:00, using a slow and steady pour in circular motions from the center to the edge and back to the center. This helps maintain a consistent flow of water through the coffee grounds.
  7. Allow the coffee to draw down until most of the water has passed through the coffee bed. Typically, the total brew time should be around three minutes.
  8. Remove the Kalita Wave from the top of the mug or carafe and serve your delicious cup of Kalita Wave-brewed coffee.
